Lizzo reflected on her experiences with public backlash and cancellation in a new Substack essay, suggesting that everyone should be “cancelled at least once” in order to learn from it. Raised in a strict Pentecostal church, she contrasted her efforts to be a “good person” with the harsh judgment she faces online, where sensitivity is high and “the court of public opinion is always ready to be judge, jury and executioner.” She addressed her past controversies, including accusations of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment from former employees – claims she denied and which were partially dismissed – and the challenges of navigating public scrutiny in an era of polarized morals. She emphasized that no one can avoid making mistakes or upsetting people in today’s climate, while writing that “You aren’t getting out of this thing without unintentionally hurting someone’s feelings.” (NME)
